Porcelain:
During King Rama V’s reign, Thailand was significantly influenced by western culture. Porcelain that had been imported from China since the Ayutthaya period was replaced by European-style porcelain. King Rama V, an avid collector of porcelain himself, owned a lot of these items which are on display at Vimanmek Mansion..

Small Artifacts:
King Rama V’s reign was a prosperous and peaceful period for Thailand. People had time to enjoy art, hobbies and recreation. One of the hobbies which became popular was collecting art and craft items such as picture frames, ivory boxes, porcelain and other rare objects.

Goldware and Silverware:
When King Rama V visited Europe to promote international relations, he brought back with him pieces of fine gold-enamel work, especially some pieces from the legendary Peter Carl Faberge, the well-known goldsmith to the Russian court.

Nielloware:
Thai nielloware is made by engraving textures on surface of gold or silver and blackening the texture with certain chemical to bring out the beauty. Nielloware has been used to decorate Royal thrones, manuscript covers and wide variety of trays, boxes, bowls, urns, vases and other vessels.

Glassware: This became popular during the reign of King Rama V. In Europe in the late 19th century, the design of glassware developed in the Art Nouveau style, which added colours to the design which had never been seen before. Art Nouveau glass was very popular with Thai aristocrats, who used it for decorating Buddha altars. Imported glass which could be adapted for this use, and for incense burners and flower holders, was much in demand.
