THE ROYAL TURF CLUB
THE ROYAL TURF CLUB
When King Rama V returned from his state visit to Europe in 1897, "The Brine Study Club" which members were civil servants or students who studied in Europe organised a horse racing at the Phra main Ground as an act of allegiance. All the horse used in that race came from the carriage?pulling horses from different stables and this gave rise to the beginning of "the first western?style horse racing in Thailand."
In the reign of King Rama VI, Phraya Pradi?patF bal and Phraya Attakarnprasit asked for the royal permission for the establishment of the horse racing club with the purpose for horse breeding. The king granted the permission and gave the nam "Ratchatrinnamai-samakom" and accepted it to be under his patronage.
Today the club manages horse racing, regis?tration of horses as well as owners and associates i.e., stable representatives, trainers, etc. The club
is also the centre for horse training and testing. Each year there are approximately 26 races on ever other Sunday by alternating with the Royal Banc ok Sports Club. There are 4 cerebrated cups for the club: the Royal "Darby Cup," Ram Rakop Cup. 'phraya Pradipatpubal Cup, and the Chairman's CUP
