   THE SUKHOTHAI-BANGKOK
THE SUKHOTHAI-BANGKOK

The Sukhothai-Bangkok, I presents travellers with the best of more than 750 years of Thai art and architecture. Behind the entrance along Bangkok's Embassy Row, the palm-lined driveway and six acres of flower gardens and lily ponds recapture the serenity of Thailand's Golden Age. The hotel takes not only inspiration but its name from Sukhothai, the Thai kingdom's first capital that reigned from 1238 to 1376.

A member of the Beaufort hotel group, The Sukhothai shunned the high-rise trend when it opened in November of 1991. It was designed by the same architects who conceptualized the award-winning Amanpuri resort in Phuket. Instead of one lofty tower, simple pitched roofs cap an enclave of four- to nine-storey buildings. In brass lamp holders, terracotta frames, and wall hangings, the interiors repeat scenes from some of the nation's greatest epics.

The lobby courtyard's reflection pond mirrors replicas of thirteenth-century Sukhothai stupas. Long views of bold architectural symmetry and the artful use of teak, granite, mirror, glass, ceramic, metal, and the finest Thai fabrics recall the palatial salons of the ancient capital.
At the same time, the hotel incorporates the latest technology and comforts of the 1990s. Every room comes with an electronic security key; individually controlled air-conditioning; remote-control stereo television with radio, in-house movies, and cable reception; electronic safe; bar and refrigerator; two large wardrobe closets; international direct dial telephones; and a fax machine with its own private number. Stunning teak-floored bathrooms equal the size of most standard hotel rooms.

Guests find oversized bathtubs, separate shower and toilet enclosures, hair dryers, bathrobes, phones, and luxurious toiletries. Ground floor suites provide exceptionally high ceilings. Private balconies facing the inner courtyard and lily ponds make idyllic spots for breakfast or afternoon tea. The Sukhothai suite — the magnificent Sukhothai — occupies the top floor of the main building and commands sweeping views of the gardens and city skyline. Five-star amenities for guests in every room and suite include valet parking and limousine service, same-day laundry and valet, city-wide paging, and in-room dining and butler service around the clock.

A state-of-the-art Business Centre caters to groups and individuals with a complete library of directories and business literature, computers and other office equipment, and experienced personnel. The centre's private office space and two boardrooms combine with the hotel's ballroom and meeting salons to entertain groups of every size up to 300.
For guests wishing to combine business with sport, The Sukhothai maintains close ties with Bangkok's finest golf clubs. On-site leisure facilities include a fully equipped Health Centre (with gym, sauna, steam bath, whirlpool, and massage), a 25-metre swimming pool, two competition squash courts, and a floodlit tennis court.

Gourmets arrive from all over the city to enjoy The Sukhothai's dining venues. Next to the lobby-level Lounge, La Noppamas serves an impressive array of innovative gourmet dishes — bistro style at lunchtime and a la carte at dinner. Nearby, The Colonnade provides a less formal setting for light meals and snacks, whilst in a pavilion over the lotus pond The Celadon offers some of the city's most authentic traditional Thai dishes. All three restaurants focus on tranquil views of both the inner and outer courtyards.

Lobby salons serve cocktails and light menus all day and evening and a traditional tea in the afternoon. Terrazzo, a fourth restaurant located in the Terrace Suites building, presents menus of popular Italian items for lunch and dinner. Nearby, the pool-side terrace dispenses snacks and refreshments to sunbathers throughout the day. Conference and banqueting facilities include an elegant ballroom with timber and granite flooring and state-of-the-art equipment, all supported by the professional staff of the Business Centre. Total capacity of the facilities ranges from about 12 to 300 people, depending on seating or functioning arrangements.

Discriminating travellers recognize the mixture of superb facilities and superior service as a hallmark of Beaufort Hotels. While relying on the company's sterling reputation, they also experience the sense of serenity and well-being associated with life in Thailand's golden age.
