Amanpuri a Sanskrit word meaning "place of peace" is located on the tropical island of Phuket, off the southern coast of Thailand. A 20-minute drive from the airport, the resort overlooks the Andaman Sea from Pansea Beach. Opened as the first Amanresort in 1988, Amanpuri is a reflection of the natural beauty of Phuket and the graciousness of the Thai people.
On arrival, guests are greeted in the resort's open-air Grand Sala. The Sala's lofty 12-metre ceilings, Thai antiques and fresh orchids, invite guests to enter into an atmosphere of tranquillity and space; each guest being assigned his or her own "manager" to attend to personal needs and requests. Simplicity and privacy are also reflected in the accommodations. Forty individual Thai-style pavilions are interspersed among the palm trees of an ancient coconut plantation.
Each suite has a total area of 115
square metres, which includes a bedroom, dressing area, separate bath and shower, outdoor sala and sun deck. Interiors are elegantly furnished with soft taupe silks and cottons, and wooden panelling for the sliding doors and windows.
Adjoining the resort to the north are privately owned villa homes. Each villa consists of 2, 3 or 4 separate (Amanpuri style) bedrooms, a private swimming pool plus living and dining salas. A live-in maid and cook attend to all guest needs when the home is rented, including the preparation of meals.
Guests staying in the villa homes have access to all of the facilities and services of the resort.
The resort's facilities include a freshwater swimming pool, sauna, gymnasium, beach club, tennis courts with professional coaching, salon with beauty treatments and massage, art and antique gallery, boutique, library, and two restaurants specializing in Thai and Italian cuisine, and an open-air bar.
Amanpuri is the only hotel in Thailand with its own complete maritime facilities. Its vessels, numbering 14 in total specialize in both scheduled and private charters. Guests may select from a classic Chinese sailing junk, typical of those found in Singapore and Hong Kong around the turn of the century, to the fast moving Bowrider. For groups up to 24, there is the 18-metre Bluewater yacht with two air-conditioned double cabins, large open fly bridge and sun deck. All vessels are crewed by experienced, qualified personnel, carry insurance and have all recreational equipment on board.
The hotel's cruise division also provides extensive water sports activities including windsurfing, snorkelling, scuba-diving, water-skiing and deep-sea fishing. Its PADI-training facility specializes in diving programmes for both experienced and novice divers. The introductory course, for
example, is a quick, safe way to experience the thrill of scuba-diving in one day. About 30 minutes from the beachfront area variety of diving spots swarming with some of the Andaman Sea's most exquisite undersea life.
Phuket is also a superb location for golfers with five excellent courses to choose from. Amanpuri holds a membership at the island's most exclusive and challenging course, where tee-off times, caddies and equipment can all be prearranged. Since its opening, Amanpuri has established its reputation as a luxury resort where personal service, recreational facilities and fine cuisine compliment the natural beauty of the surroundings.
