Doi Mae Salong Chiang Rai

During World War II ninety-three companies of soldiers were sent to the Myanmar by the government in Yunnan, China. At the conclusion of the war, the soldiers were forced to stay in Thailand because of the coup d' etat that had occurred back home. General Tuan and his refugee soldiers settled in Doi Mae Salong leaving a presence that can still be felt today.
Location
Doi Mae Salong is located in the Daen Lao Mountains Range in Amphoe Mae Chan in the Chiang Rai Province. This Chinese Hill Tribe area offers excellent Chinese food, tea, souvenirs and beautiful views.

Highlights

Sakura Road: Four kilometers before you reach the top of the hill, you will find Sakura Road. From this road, you can see the Sakura trees brilliant pink blossoms.
The General Tuan Memorial: General Tuan was the
leader of the five Chinese brigades sent into the area. After the coup d' etat in his home country, he and his men had to live as refugees in this strange land. Finally they were able to settle and gave birth to the Chinese Hill Tribes of today. This marble memorial stands in
tribute to him and is visited by everyday by tourists wishing to pay respect to this great soldier.
The Srinakharindhra Satitmahasantikhiri Royal Pagoda: This beautiful Chedi, sitting atop the hill, was constructed as a show of respect to the King's Mother. From here, there is a beautiful view of the path to Doi Mae Salong.
The Hill Tribe Village : This Chinese Hill Tribe community has many accommodations, excellent Chinese restaurants, souvenirs, and their famous Chinese tea. The most popular dish here is the pork dumplings.

How to Get There
From the town of Chiang Rai, take Highway 110 to Mae Chan. Drive for twenty-nine kilometers. When you pass Amphoe Mae Chan, drive for one kilometer and turn left. Continue driving for forty-five kilometers along Highway 1234 to Doi Mae Salong. The total distance from Chiang Rai is seventy-five kilometers.
